The study of formal methods based on interactive theorem proving, such as Isabelle/HOL, is crucial to build trustworthy software and hardware systems.
These methods allow us to create mathematically rigorous models of systems and to verify their properties with a level of confidence that goes beyond traditional testing approaches.
Using tools such as Isabelle/HOL, we can prove that a system behaves correctly under all possible conditions, rather than just the limited scenarios covered by traditional testing.
This is particularly important for safety-critical systems in areas such as aviation, medical devices or nuclear power plants, where errors can have catastrophic consequences.
In addition, the process of formal specification and verification can help identify design flaws and inconsistencies early in the development process, potentially saving time and resources in the long run.
As our reliance on complex systems continues to grow, the study of formal methods becomes increasingly important to ensure the trustworthiness of these systems.
